An introduction to Indian Art through Beauty
One of the most vital concepts in the understanding of Indian art is Sringara. The many faces of Indian Beauty. For any ‘rasika’ or enjoyer of beauty, Shringara plays a very important role. Shringara is one of the ‘Navarasas’ of the 9 sentiments of understanding beauty and art. It is also the king of all rasas and is known as the Rasaraja. Through the three modules I plan to take the viewer into 3 different journeys of:
Beauty through Shringara, Temple Art and Indian Paintings respectively.
Beauty through Shringara
The 1st Module is to view the concept and the underlying aesthetics of beauty through Shringara. The visual imagery in this course spans from 2nd Century Nataraja Sculpture from Chola Dynasty to a 12th century Apsara in Sandstone from Uttar Pradesh, including some Ajanta frescos, manuscripts from Bhagvada Purana, to the folio from Ragmala series displaying a perfect portrayal of Shringara through different forms of Art.
`Beauty through Temple Art
The 2nd module is to view the concept and the underlying aesthetics of beauty through Temple architecture across all over India. Through a set of 21 architectural images the beauty of Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves in Madhya Pradesh to the Meenakshi Temple in Tamil Nadu, Kamakhya in Assam, Lingaraja in Odisha to Shree Padmanabhaswamy in Kerala in South has been described briefly in this particular course.
Beauty through Indian Paintings
The 3rd module is to view the concept and the underlying aesthetics of beauty through Paintings. Through a range of 18-20 paintings from Bhimbetka, Basholi Painting, Kangra, Rajput, Mughal and Deccan paintings to the Raja Ravi Varma from the 19th Century, the module gives an insight into the patronage, theme, methods and material which makes a painting.
