The profession of designing buildings, open areas, communities, and other artificial constructions and environments, usually with some regard to aesthetic effect. Architecture often includes design or selection of furnishings and decorations, supervision of construction work, and the examination, restoration, or remodelling of existing buildings. Architecture is a passion, a vocation, a calling — as well as a science and a business. It has been described as a social art and also an artful science. Architecture must be of the highest quality of design. Architecture provides, in the words of Marcus Vitruvius, the great Roman architect and historian, “firmness, commodity and delight.

With 400 architecture colleges which have an approximate intake of 60 students, India produce around 24,000 graduates per year. This is only 20% of the national requirement. The data calculated by IBISWorld Report notes steady progress of annual growth of 2.1% for architecture services globally in the last 5 years. In the IBISWorld Report, targeting Global Architecture Industry statistics, released in 2015, it was predicted that the increase within the annual growth rate would become 2.2% from the year 2015 till 2020.

Out of the Thirty thousand Architects in India, 15,000 Architects (50%) are in the age group of 20-35 and there are just about 1500 Architects (10%) in the age group of 66-75. Surprisingly, there are 267 Architects in the age group 76-85, and believe it or not there are 54 Architects older than 85 who are still practicing. Architecture being a creative field, one can just not fix an age of retirement. So if you have the enthusiasm for it, you could still be practicing at 90.
