For many years now, in many government institutions there is a lot of competition between promotees and direct recruits over seniority. The Supreme Court in the Meghachandra judgment has categorically put the issue to rest. It has now been held that seniority of a direct recuitee would be from the date he joins service i.e. he is born in service and not from the date the vacancy for that post arose. It has been held that NR Parmar judgment is no longer good law.
